Though decreasing screen time on electronic devices can be a hard task, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends limiting or eliminating screen time for all children under 5 years old. The current recommendation by the World Health Organization is no screen time for children under 1-year-old. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time from children under 18 months old. For children, ages 2-5 years old, the World Health Organization and American Academy of Pediatrics both recommend a maximum of 1 hour of screen time but note that less is better. There are no set recommendations for children 6 and up, but less is better and to never let screen time impede mealtimes and sleep. Instead of spending time on digital devices, it is best to spend more time with active play and outdoor activities.

Spending less time on devices will help preserve the health of your child’s eyes. Studies show a correlation between time spent with a near work like digital devices and the development of nearsightedness, also known as myopia. Myopia is becoming increasingly more prevalent in the United States and around the world because of more time spent doing near work in this digital era. They have shown more outdoor playtime to be protective against myopia. Children who spend more time on screens are also more likely to have eye strain and dry eyes.

The American Optometric Association recommends children who use digital devices often to practice the 20-20-20 rule. For every 20 minutes of screen time, have your child look away from the screen and at a distant object (20 feet) for at least 20 seconds. Prescription blue-blocking lenses can protect your child from harmful blue light that can cause eyestrain and interfere with sleep. Minimizing your child's screen time may be a difficult task, however, taking these steps to reduce eye strain could have long-term benefits for reducing the development of myopia, preventing digital eye strain and avoiding severe dry eyes.
