LASIK Consultation

What is LASIK or refractive surgery?

LASIK surgery refractive is a procedure that corrects vision for one distance. Doctors achieve this by changing the shape of the cornea to focus directly onto the retina. LASIK surgery is a good option for those who want to be glasses-free. We welcome you to talk to our doctors during a detailed consultation to understand which refractive surgery options are best for you.

What to expect during a LASIK Consultation?

Our doctor will determine your goal for choosing LASIK during your LASIK consultation and make sure your eyes are healthy enough for the surgery. Our doctors will also dilate your eye to ensure the health of your back of the eye. The examination and diagnostic tests would be similar to what you would expect from your routine eye exam. Your doctor will look for some of the things your doctor will look for are the condition of your eye, the quality of vision, the thickness and elevation map of your cornea, and tear film quality.

Q: Am I the right LASIK candidate?

A: Our doctors will help determine if you are the right candidate by performing a few tests and taking measurements. LASIK candidates are generally near-sighted (myopic), have typically healthy eyes, have had little change in their glasses prescription over the last 2-3 years, and have healthy corneal thickness. LASIK patients are usually those that are inconvenienced by contact lenses or glasses. During the consultation, your optometrist will determine the most up-to-date refractive error (prescription to be targeted during surgery), corneal topography where the cornea's thickness and elevation are mapped,
and determining the eye’s health.

Q: How long do I have to be out of my contact lenses before my consultation? Before surgery?

A: Our doctor recommends you discontinue the soft contact lens one week before your consultation. If you wear hard lenses, you should be out of your contact lenses for at least two weeks. Removing your lenses is fundamental to ensure the most accurate corneal measurements.

Q: What if I have dry eyes? Would I still be a good candidate?

A: Our doctors will start dry eye treatment before your surgery to ensure the best possible outcome. . During any refractive surgery, incisions are made into the cornea, cutting into corneal nerves. Corneal nerves help send a signal to the eye for tears to be produced, thus dry eyes symptoms can be worse after surgery. But if we treat the dry eye before the surgery, the condition will be better managed.

Q: What should I expect the day of surgery?

A: The surgical procedure itself typically takes 10 minutes per eye, depending on your prescription. The medical assistants and surgeon ensure that your eye is prepped for surgery with numbing solution, prophylactic antibiotic drops, and sterilizing solution. During the procedure, the patient is guided by the surgeon to keep focused on the laser light. Before you know it, your vision will become clearer before your eyes! We recommend you bring a trusted driver with you on surgery day.

Q: How do I take care of my eyes after the procedure? The standard follow-up appointments are 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and a year after the surgery.

During this time and for the first night, you will wear goggles to prevent the incision and corneal flap from being altered. The doctor will prescribe 3 different types of drops to use 4 times a day for a week. After the week, the doctor may recommend continued use of preservative-free lubricating drops. For the first 48 hours, it is recommended not to wear eye make-up; no hot tubs, pools, saunas, or rivers for 2 weeks, and no rubbing of the eyes for 2 weeks. The standard follow-up appointments are 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and a year after the surgery.
